Thermostat Not Working

What a pro does

Batteries and a loose subbase get ruled out in the first minute. After that, a tech works the low-voltage side: measuring transformer output, checking the control fuse on the board, and testing the wires between the wall and the equipment, because a staple through a cable in an old wall or a corroded terminal makes a good thermostat look dead. Jumping the heat terminal directly at the board settles it fast. If the burner fires, the thermostat or its wiring owns the problem. If nothing happens, the equipment does. Smart thermostats add their own wrinkle in older homes, where the cable run has four wires and no dedicated common, so the device can't help but steal power through the heat circuit and browns out mid-cycle. That looks like a random reset, but it isn't one. Location matters as well, since a stat on a wall taking wind-driven cold reads several degrees off the rest of the house.

That result points away from the device and toward the wiring or the equipment control. A fault in the cable, at the terminals, or on the board will follow you through any number of new thermostats.
Most often it is a power supply issue. Without a common wire it draws current through the heating circuit, and when that supply gets marginal the device reboots rather than holding a steady call for heat.
Many models allow an offset, but it is worth checking placement first. Sun through a window, a nearby lamp, an exterior wall, or air leaking out of the wall cavity behind it will all skew the sensor.
If the equipment is running when it should not be, or cycling oddly, switching it off at the breaker until someone can look is a reasonable precaution.
