Boiler Leaking Water

Water escaping a boiler tends to get worse quietly rather than suddenly, so make the call while it is still a drip.

What a pro does

Finding the leak matters more than stopping it. A tech dries every surface, runs the unit, and watches which joint wets first, because water tracks along piping and doesn't always drop where it started. Common origins are a tired relief valve, a circulator seal that has given up, a threaded fitting fatigued by years of expansion, or a pinhole in an aging section. Pressure that climbs on its own points at the expansion tank rather than at anything visibly wet. In older frame houses where the boiler shares a low basement with panel wiring and stored belongings, killing power at the breaker and closing the feed valve buys safe time. Newer sealed-combustion units leak too, usually at a condensate trap or a plastic drain line, and that fix isn't anything like a repair on old iron.

Frequently asked questions

It does. A leak that appears only under heat and pressure usually sits at a valve, a pump seal, or a joint that opens slightly as the metal expands, and it can seal itself again once everything cools.
Waiting is how a weep becomes a section replacement. Water sitting against iron or steel keeps eating at it around the clock, and the heating season is exactly when the system is under the most stress.
Sometimes, especially on a humid day in a cool basement, though condensation wets a broad cold surface evenly while a real leak leaves a trail from one point.
That is often condensate rather than system water. These units drain acidic condensate through a small line, and a plugged trap or a tipped neutralizer will spill it onto the slab.
