Radiators Not Heating
Cold radiators in a system that otherwise works usually trace to one loop or one vent, so call and mention which rooms are affected.
When this becomes an emergency
- Some rooms warm up normally while one or two radiators never get past cool.
- A radiator is hot along the bottom and stone cold across the top.
- You hear gurgling or trickling inside a radiator whenever the system runs.
- The air vent on a radiator hisses continuously or spits droplets.
What a pro does
A boiler that heats most of the house is rarely the culprit. On hot-water systems, air collects at high points and blocks flow, and the classic tell is a radiator hot at the bottom with a cold upper half. Bleeding clears it, though a system that fills with air again every few weeks has a leak or a failing air separator behind it, and that's the part worth chasing. Zone problems look similar. A seized zone valve, a circulator that spins without moving water, or a thermostat wired to a zone nobody has checked in years can leave one part of a house cold while the rest is fine. Steam doesn't play by those rules. There the villain is usually a plugged air vent, since steam cannot enter a radiator until the air inside can get out. In converted older homes, pipe pitch that shifted when the house settled will hold condensate and cause banging as well as poor heat.
